UNDP EUROPEAN UNION TOURISM PLAN
The vision for tourism in the Kukës Region advocates the development of an “environmentally- friendly tourism sector based on the sustainable use of its exceptional natural and cultural resources." This view should become a guiding principle immediately if ecotourism is to be well established in the Kukës Region by 2020, providing jobs and income for a significant proportion of the local population.
The relationship between tourism and the environment and the sustainable development of the tourism sector will by then be well understood, not just at the local level but also at the regional level, implying cross-border cooperation with Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro. Through this cooperation major challenges will have been overcome and the most important European standards achieved. Such an approach will result in a development of tourism which is integrated with the environment and other related sectors of the economy. Environmental awareness concerning the need to protect and enhance the environment as part of an eco-tourism development plan has grown dramatically among the region's residents in the past few years since tourism has increased. The information on this website was collected and published by two American Peace Corps Volunteers living in Bajram Curri for two years and will be sustained by members of the Bajram Curri and Kukës Bashkia (municipality). While collecting the information for this website we were able to explore and learn more about the region and its rich culture. Albania, in general, lacks information on the internet for foreigners who would like to travel to this small Balkan country and do not speak the native language. We believe having this information on the internet will make the region more accessible to travelers and easier to navigate for people who don't speak the native language or are traveling independently.
